Kindle - how to read on it "for free"

How to easily read books, papers on your kindle.

I really enjoy my Kindle.

How to read on it for free

When you buy a kindle, you can either pay for each book you buy/rent, or get a subscription for an unlimited amount of books. I think this is reasonable.

However, there are more ways to get books on your kindle. For everything below, while you can imports PDFs onto your kindle, I prefer .epub, a widespread e-book format (also works on Apple Books for instance).

Library Card + Libby

You can use a public library card to read on your kindle. Go to your county library, get a card, and then connect it to the Libby app. From there, on most (but not all, I do not know why) books, there should be a button titled “Read with Kindle”. Press on that, login, …, and then that book will be transferred over.

Calibre

Calibre is a all-in-one tool for e-books. Here is the link https://calibre-ebook.com/.

You can import many document types inside, convert them, and then send them to whatever device you wish. Very useful. It also seems to support automatic retrieval of newspapers, which is really nice.

Before sending to your kindle, I would change the automatic conversion to output .epub.

Send to Kindle

Send to Kindle by Amazon is the official Amazon method to send books to your kindle. You can send .pdf, .epub, .txt and many more file types through this portal.

Browse available entries on Libby.

Archive.org

Archive.org store many books in various formats. Their specialized site is Openlibary.

You can either download them or borrow them. I do not know how the latter works exactly.

Gutenberg.org

Project Gutenberg has 70000+ eBooks. Download them there.

Grey area of legality: Libgen

Although many students know this resource, I will remind that LibGen (Library Genesis) is illegal in the USA.

Although I don’t know anyone who got arrested over downloads here, I’d use it as a last resort. Everything is here. Everything.
